Ingredients
Scale
- 1 ½ cups warm water (110°F to 115°F)
- 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 10 hot dogs
- 1/4 cup baking soda
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- Coarse sea salt (for topping)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
- Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms, then knead for about 5 minutes until smooth.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water to a boil and add baking soda.
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 10 equal pieces.
- Roll each piece into a long rope (about 24 inches) and wrap it around each hot dog, pressing the ends to seal.
- Carefully place each wrapped hot dog into the boiling water for about 30 seconds, then remove and place on the prepared baking sheet.
- Brush the tops with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
- Let cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- For a cheese-filled pretzel dog, place a small piece of cheese inside the dough before wrapping around the hot dog.
- Experiment with different toppings like garlic powder or sesame seeds.
