Instructions
- Prep the Stage:: First things first, get that oven preheating to 400°F (200°C). Then, line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. This is where I always forget to do the parchment paper and end up with sticky situations, so don’t be like me! Unroll your puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface or right on the parchment. Mine usually cracks a little, but don’t fret, you can just pinch it back together. It’s all part of the charm, right?
- Wrap the Mummies:: Now, grab your cocktail sausages. If you’re using cheese, cut your cheddar slices into thin strips and wrap a piece around each sausage. Next, slice your puff pastry into thin strips, about 1/4 to 1/2 inch wide. This is where my strips always end up uneven, but hey, handmade charm! Carefully wrap each sausage with a pastry strip, leaving a small gap for the ‘face’. Overlap them slightly to mimic bandages. Don’t pull too tight, or they might burst in the oven. I learned that the hard way, with a few exploding mummies!
- Give Them Eyes and a Glow:: Arrange your wrapped mummies on the prepared baking sheet, making sure they have a little breathing room. If you didn’t add cheese, dab a tiny bit of Dijon mustard where the ‘eyes’ will go. This helps the sesame seeds stick. Then, gently place two sesame seeds for each mummy’s eyes. In a small bowl, whisk that egg for your egg wash. Brush it lightly over all the pastry strips. This is the secret to that gorgeous golden brown finish; it’ll make them shine, I promise!
- Bake ‘Em Up:: Pop that baking sheet into your preheated oven. Bake for about 20-25 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed, golden brown, and cooked through. Every oven is a little different, so keep an eye on them around the 18-minute mark. You want them flaky and golden, not burnt! The kitchen starts smelling absolutely heavenly at this point, like a warm bakery with a hint of savory goodness.
- Cool Down (a Little):: Once they’re beautifully golden, carefully take the baking sheet out of the oven. Let the Office-Friendly Halloween Potluck bites cool on the sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack. They’ll be super hot and a bit delicate right out of the oven, so give them a moment to firm up. This is usually when I burn my tongue because I can’t wait to try one, oops!
- Serve with Spooky Style:: Serve your Office-Friendly Halloween Potluck Savory Mummy Bites warm with your favorite dipping sauces. Ketchup, sriracha mayo, honey mustard—whatever makes your heart sing! They’re absolutely adorable and always a hit. I like to arrange them on a platter like they’re marching, or in a circle around a small bowl of dip. Enjoy the compliments, you earned them!
